This never happened v1.0. Whenever I start up SMAC, I get an illegal operation saying someting in title bar like mrv283 or something like that.So I close it and try to get on with the game. But when I try I notice I can only see a few letters like T and E. I noticed a similar topic for the German version, so I wonder if this in common. Please any help would be appreciated. Lodi |

Weird. Probably not the same thing as the german one. Where does it crash? Do you see the firaxis logo? What's your system specs? Try the tweaking suggestions in the readme.txt (namely directdraw=0 and renaming the sound.dll). Also, try downloading DX 6.1 from www.microsoft.com/directx and see if that helps. jkm firaxis games |

Hello Jeff, your reaction to american posts is rather quick. What about the (admittedly not related to this problem) german one?

No, I think mine is a genuine german version/language problem. Later in the game when the units where upgraded several times and the unit-info gets longer it doesnt fit into the unit window anymore (for own units and opposite ones alike). There are no scrollbars. The bottom lines are just cut off. Some infos which extend over two lines(item/value) could as well fit into one, though. I posted this topic one or two days ago and ran into this one by accident. |

It doesn't crash, but has an illegal operation at the opening video. When I hit close it just starts playing the intro video. I have a legal, storebought version, and I do see the Firaxis logo. I will try the tweak later.I also have had the DirectX v6.1 for a time now. My specs are a 200 Mhz MMx Pentium, 64 MB Ram, Diamond Viper V330, Ensonique sound card, Western Digital 6.4 GB hard drive, and Memorex 32X CD-ROM. It only happens when I am connected to the internet though. |

Hello Jeff, I tried to make a screenshot, but it didn't work. I think I can send you one or two savegames which show the problem. By the way, my thread describing this was "text missing in german version". |

Hey Lodi, seems like this a little private thread now.

Lodi, Is there sound with the video after you hit close? It sounds like there might be a resource conflict between two pieces of hardware (probably between your sound card and modem). Check what resources each use (in System under the Control Panel, then Device Manager tab) to see if there's a conflict. If that's the case you might have to disable sound when you're using your modem, or vise versa. -- TheUnforgiven |

I have also found out what it says in the titlebar of the illegal operation problem: Msgsrv32 What could that be? Also the last time it did the illegal operation thing on me, it gave me the options of Close or Ignore. I choose Ignore and noticed no change in text. This was a change from my previous options, where I could only choose Close or the Detail options. |

This really is a weird thread. Sorry, now news for you Lodi (for me neither). I just had to write something to keep it going. |
