Great Game!! (seriously)
ok now that that's out of the way...i've been playing a little multiplayer w/ a friend via a modem connection. what feels like every 20 to 30 minutes of gameplay the game crashes on one of our computers with the message that the program (terran.exe) has performed an illegal operation. this has happened to both of our machines about an equal number of times. can anyone tell me why this might be happening and/or what i can do to fix it? is this something that will be handled in an upcoming patch? (we both have v2.0) i have read through some of the threads on this BB, and frankly i'm not too confident in getting a fix for this, but i thought i'd try anyway. the most common time the crash occurs is whenever a person's turn comes up while they are in negotiations with another faction. help?

after reading through more of these threads i thought i should add that i went ahead and checked dxdiag.exe and everything checks out fine. all of my drivers are current. we were playing in non-simultaneous mode.
a program called Swapmon controls my swap file. supposedly it is optimized for my system (i am an avid q2 junkie and starting using this program to eliminate hard drive thrashing- works well).
my system specs:

PII 400, 96 MB SDRAM, 10.1 GB hard-drive, 8MB ATI Rage Pro, Turtle Beach Montego A3D, etc. etc.

my friend's specs (what little i know..)

PII 400, 64 MB SDRAM, 8 GB hard-drive, 8MB vid card of some kind

This sounds identical to the problems I was having with a friend. Changing the following lines in the Alpha Centauri.INI file to the following fixed the problem:

ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1
ds3d=0
eax=0

we still get the occasional crash but can play for at least 4 hours. I'm not really sure what these settings control but I gathered from reading this form that they can fix some problems. If anyone knows what the do I like to know.

Try disabling your swapfile thing. I can assure you we never tested with such software, so who knows what it does to the game.
