I to get the pagefault with the Terran.exe
Dx6.1 under win98, tjeks out OK,
Swabfile size run by windows.
I had the game installed in the shop where I bougth it - worked fine there.
Tried everything this board has surgested.
I have had the game for over a week and have not been able to play it yet!
The game stops just after you makes planetfall.
Is there a solution on the way, or do I have
to wait till I get a new PC.

Problem: The game (european ed.)makes the following, "sidefejl"(Danish) meaning "pagefault" the rest of the babble must be more or less international:
>TERRAN forrsagede en ugyldig sidefejl i
>modul TERRAN.EXE p adressen 023f:0061a364.

Polar, since it's not everybody who is getting this error (I'm running the same version as you - on 95 though - no probs), I suspect that it's something else running on your system that trips Terran.exe.
Try calling up the task manager (ctrl-alt-del) and take out running processes one by one, starting up SMAC (and restarting if the problem persists) inbetween. You just might get lucky....
Tip: Skip the explorer process though, that'll kill your desktop....

Make sure you've got 100+ megs free on the OS drive. Also, try closing out all the programs running in the systray. Is your processor overclocked? You could also try renaming the sound.dll just to see if that's the beef. Run DXDiag.exe and look for "!" and notes on the driver page.

Uh..fix what? Are you getting crashes as well? If so, try the steps I mentioned. The copy protection is the reason you need the CD. That is completely EA's domain and we have absolutely no control over the scheme.

i have 726mb left on c: drive.
Dxdiag reports: sb16snd.drv,sbawe32.drv,sbfm.drv var uncertified(should maybe try finding fresh certified files instead.but didnt help sound.dl_ issue though, but who knows ill try certified.).i have downclocked the cpu(to default).in Dxdiag every test seems fine.
i run my default monitor in 1600x1200x16bit(have a actebisTM4895-3 monitor).

my system spec: AbitBH06,Cel300A,CanopusTNT,256mb ram,32gbHD(my os runs on IBM deskstar8),Plextor32x,adaptec2940uw,Sb64GOLD,teac4x/12x,acctonnetworkcard(100mbit),TelesISDNcard(isa),IBM8.4gb(IDE),MaxtorDiamondMAx17gb(ide ),QuantumAtlas2(uw),Seagate2.1gb(ide), using: Win98(final 4.10.1998) with DirectX6.1 and my tnt graphiccard is using newest drivers(detonator).i usually always uses newest drivers for all hw.

my pagefault(and is always the same):

"TERRAN caused an invalid page fault in

Try updating the drivers. Also try manually setting your desktop resolution to 1024x768x8 bit (256 colors).

I have been having the same problem and tried changing the resolution and color setting as you suggested. While the game now looks nicer ...it is still crashing and giving the same terran.exe error as has been reported.

Jeff, many people are reporting this same error. Has anyone resolved the error? The problem seams to be happening across a wide range of pc's which suggests a programing bug.

Is anyone in programming working on this problem for the next patch?

FYI,

I get the TERRAN.EXE crash and also HOMEBASE.EXE window just before. Game locks,
must restart. Since the game is now running
fine otherwise (well some sound problems)
this is just an annoyance.

Have tried all the fixes mentioned on the forum, running DX 6.1 all drivers certified.

This is interesting, the crash only happens
when I am on the Base/Resorce menu, usually
when I am taking alot of time trying to decide what to produce. Is this where the
crash is happening to the res of you?

QS
PS. Nice work here Jeff Morris!

I have (or had?) the problem with the crashing terran.exe. The maximum was 5 minutes playtime before the crash. In most cases it was terran.exe; After closing the program the system always became instable, causing another protection faults.

After a while of experimenting with the tips found in this forum there was one (and only one) way to resolve the problem: to rename the sound.dll to remove all the sound.
I am using a Creative Labs Awe 64 (ISA). I installed the newest drivers but it doesn't helps anything. The directx test declared several sounddrivers as not certified, but all the tests ran without a problem.

Other data: Pentium II-333 on a P2L97, 128MB, Plextor Cdrom 12-20 with an Adaptec 2940, EIDE harddisks, WIN98, DirectX6.1, Matrox Productiva (G100) 8MB, 500MB free on C: and WIN98 is automatically managing the swapfile on C: ; Alpha Centauri is the German Version.

Obviously it is not possible to get certified directX drivers for my soundcard.

Am I screwed???? I am playing a good deal of games, but this one is the first one to give me this kind of problems. And except this I have no problems with the stability of my system.

Thanks,

Schuppi

It's not a general game problem since not everyone is experiencing it. It's a system conflict, and we just need to determine what is causing it. I'll loosing track of everybody in this thread and what's already been tried. Email me at [email protected] with your system specs, the details of the problem, and what you've explicitly tried. Most of these problem are getting solved, so don't worry.
