I was playing SMAC with an older AWE32 soundcard w/Diamond Viper 550 on an AMD k6-2 350 w/128mb SDRAM, and it worked just fine.

Then I bought a SB Live! Value card, w/latest drivers, with v.2.0 SMAC (supposedly to ENHANCE my sound experience via EAX extensions...) and now I have vicious crashes at the end of turns.

After I hit ENTER to finish the turn, and ESPECIALLY if I'm discovering a new tech, BAM! Crash crash crash. Here's the scoop straight from the horse's mouth:

TERRAN caused an invalid page fault in
module SOUND.DLL at 0177:1000941d.

Running a BCM VP1541 AGP motherboard, K6-2 350, 128 MB SDRAM, SB Live! Value card w/latest drivers, SMAC v.2.0, Viper550 video, Sony 17sfII monitor, no network cards. 2 HDDs.

The error is obviously a sound problem.

Again, happens only at the end of turn (I have it paused at end of turn), after I hit Enter. Usually it runs through the enemy moves fine, then BAM! Terran crashes. Windows works, but no sound, and if I restart SMAC, all sort of goofiness ensues (graphics bugs, then hangs).

I have almost an identical setup, except my motherboard is a MSI-5169. But same AMD K6-2/350, SB Live, Viper V550. I never got a crash like this, but I found leaving the EAX on caused a BIG decrease in performance. I disabled it in the ini file, and it has been great ever since. Also, if your using the Diamond drivers, you ought to switch to the NVIDIA reference ones, my whole system has been more stable since I did that.

Set EAX and DS3D to 0 in the alpha centauri.ini file (just to see if it fixes it).
