Ok so im at the resource screen looking at the area squares controlled by the base and what workers are allocated to what squares. But in many of my squares, it lists how much of something they're producing (nutrients, minerals, energy) in the colorful symbols, but that have a backdrop of a slightly larger blackish one. Sometimes the black backing of the symbol will be really big but the actual amount i get will be much smaller. This happens a lot for example when i farm places that already have 2 food on them.. I take it this means somehow that the square has a higher potential than what im actually getting when.. But what exactly does it mean? What causes it and how do i get that full potential?? Thanks in advance.

The border indicated how many more resources you'd get if you have the requisite tech to get 3+ from a square.
