When you attack a unit containing a fusion-or-better engine with a psi unit, the odds do not take in account the fact that good engines don't help against psi units. Sometimes I get a "the odds are very much against you" message, even though I know I'll win easily. This is SMAC V1.0

Hello Micje,Actually while i THINK there might be something weird with the odds, Brian discussed that reactors make no difference in PSI combat. Evidently a mindworm will always do damage to you EQUAL to your reactor level therefore negating any advantages of extra hit points. |

I know that, but the odds don't reflect that. They think big reactors actually help. And they don't. |

What exactly calculates a unit's psi strength? I've had some units with a 1 some with a 2 and some with a 3, and they are all the same design? Does it have something to do with the city's facilities? If so what. I've built scout units on the first turn and they almost always have a 3 psi rating, but the synthmetal sentinels almost always have 2s. My rovers are usually 1s and 2s, but I've gotten an occasional 3. What determines their base psi strength? |

Psi odds are determined by whether you are attacking or defending. Attacking land units get a base strength of 3, and the defending unit gets a base strength of 2. Sea units on both attack and defence get a base strength of 1 (as far as I know). If the modifiers seem messed up, (eg. Very Green unit w/ -3 morale social setting gets a +37% modifier for the green status), this is a bug... -Chris |

Thanks for the info! I was pretty confused by it and it seemed pretty random to me. |
