Please can someone help

Ive installed the game and when attempting to run nothing happens bar the cursor going busy for about 30 seconds. Terrain.exe (win 98 tells me after alt ctrl del) is not responding. I have an intel 740 3d card with the very latest driver which they assure me is directx 6.0 compatable. I have tried the patch to no avail, I even copied the demo terrain .exe (Which works fine by the way) to the full game directory in a vain hope. It works but ends of course after 100 turns, but I do get extra sounds and that big monolith type screen for special events.

I have taken the disk back once and got a replacement (more vain hope) that didnt work.

I am getting desperate, not to say tired and emotional !

I have a PII 350 machine with 128meg ram win 98.

Ive had no trouble so far even with games like baldurs gate

Please help !

ps I have directx 6.0 and have turned direct draw off and on and the hardware accelertaion off and on, with no joy

I'm having exactly the same problem. I anso encunteded it with Simcity3000 and believe it's down to copy protection. I don't claim to be techy enough to be sure, but I think it's down to my DVD drive working differently to how the copy protection expects a CD rom to work. Do either of you use a DVD?

Yes I do have a DVD drive, Ive tried the complete install though and that didnt work but maybe it still needs the CD,

It is so annoying thjat the demo gives us a taste but the game wont work

I have exactly the same problem. I also had it with Sim City 3000. I too have a DVD drive (on p450 Gateway2000, Win 98).

It runs on our old p75 4 speed CD ROM. It also ran, but very slowly, by accessing the file on my P450 from the P75 over our LAN.

Everyone who has this problem seems to be using a DVD drive. I got mine with a Gateway 450 too, could it a problem with the DVD they use? This is the third game that has refused to launch this way for me. With Simcity3000 and Railroad Tycoon II it was down to copy protection, so I'm betting that's the problem this time too.

This DVD thing seems to a possible candidate. I dont have a gateway machine , its from Tiny but the DVD is an HITACHI
DVD-ROM GD-2500.

The question is if its the copy protection can it be patched in the game or are we stuck with it. Maybe Firaxis and Mr Morris ( who obviously doesnt get paid enough for the splendid firefighting he's doing) can come up with something else.

I have no depths I wont creep to to get this fixed !

I have the same problem. The game doesnt start at all. Only a short loading then Desktop again.

System: P2-300/128MB/Millenium2/SCSI

All other games work fine (like BG, Halflife etc)
Changed GFX Card(Mystique), Memory(down to 64MB), disabled Sound(Sound.dl_), tried Win95 and Win98, tried other CD-Rom(Atzec 6x, instead of Plextor32x).

Nothing worked at all.

Then i tried to play on my old P166 non MMX and i works.
Didn't seem to be a DVD Problem, i think it depends on the P2. All guys writing here own a P2.

Hope you got this fixed so i could play on my faster machine.

Now i tested the game on my friends AMD K6/300 with DVD.

It works. It must have something to do with the Pentium 2.

I've got exactly the same problem. The game hasn't started a single time. Each time i try to launch the game : blue screen after a fault caused by terran.exe !

My machine : PII 350 98Mo CDROM 8x Diamond Viper TNT

Please help !!

Same problem, P2 and DVD, fixed it by cannablising my old machine and fitting its old CD drive - works fine, though I do have a DVD drive and a CD drive fitted simultaneously now....

Seems to pin the problem on the DVD.

Mine starts, but get GPF in terran.exe.
I've duped it, it happens at the same
place everytime I rerun the saved game.
I've tried all the suggestions here, no
joy.

I'm running a PII, 450, 256megs-100mhz
SDRAM, a full install, nVidia 2000 AGP,
latest "Detonator" drivers(did the same
with the older drivers), DX 6.1, 4X
CDROM. The game runs without any problems
on my (other computer) slow intel 200mmx.

Apparently 'patching' the UK version with the US version of terrain.exe fixes the problem - and gets rid of the need for the CD after a full install.... I'm sure there's a lesson here somewhere, but I just can't put my finger on it.

I'm also having some trubble with starting the game but after clicking the terran.exe file for about 180 seconds and using the explorer to look around the CD the game usually starts.

I've got a Compaq Pressario 5676 with PII 450 Mhz, 128 MB SDram and a DVD player (region 2).

Oh, luke - when I try to patch the game (uk version) I get an error message when the patch is about to start on the terran.exe file so it don't get patch and therefor I still need the CD. How did you patch it?

I can't get the game to load from running terran.exe or autorun on cd. It flashes the screen for a second and then goes to desktop with nothing running. I actually deltreed windows and reinstalled to no avail. I tried playing it from my 24x scsi drive...nope. I swapped out video cards with a Matrox Millenium and reloaded drivers and Direct X. Nope. My DVD is a Toshiba drive, though I didn't load it from that and don't use it to play...Any ideas?

My system:
Xeon 400
SB Live
Guillemot Banshee Card
Dx 6.0
DVD Drive and Cdrom

When I said 'patch' I meant that you replace the UK version of terrain.exe with the US one. - I've only heard this rather than tried it (don't know where to get hold of a US version of terrian.exe). The US one doesn't have the copy protection so theres no problem....

The US patch doesn't work with the UK terrain .exe 'cos the exes are different

Why Oh Why Oh Why Oh Why.....

This isnt actually from me, but the chap who wanted it posted cant post for some reason even though he has an account. As he was good enough to reply to me its only fair I post this:-
"I bought the UK version at the weekend, installed it, tried to run it and
found nothing happened. I was understandably dissappointed. However,
after some experimentation I discovered that if you perform a full install,
start the game from the start menu (I'm not sure that's important) and then
wait, and wait, and wait... eventually the game does start. I watched my
DVD and HD lights and noticed that they were quite busy which is what
inspired me to keep waiting. Sometimes the lights go out for a while but
eventually they come back on and eveything works OK.

So my recommendation is to full install and keep waiting. I haven't timed
it yet but I would say that it could take a minute or more to start, this
is obviously unacceptable but at least it gets the game going. As an
aside, FA Premier Manager 99 (also from EA) has the same problem on my
computer.

I hope by now you've found other ways to get your play ;-) If you think
this information would be of use then please post it onto the Fraxis
Support group on my behalf."

Well!
Same problem here!
But I've got no PII or DVD just regular P133\32RAM\CDx24\Win98\MatroxMillenium.
I have had same problems with RailTycoon2 too but got helped with latest patch by firaxis guys.

Ok,

For all you people out there, UK and US, I've had the same problem with SMAC not starting. But, I don't have a PII, or a DVD.

Here's my system specs:

AMD K6/233
128 Megs of RAM
4 Gig HD
Diamond Sealth 2000 2d/3d card w/ 4 megs vRAM
Voodoo 2 w/ 12 megs RAM
Creative Labs AWE 64 sound card

But here's the catch. I only get the problem after I have run alot of other programs, so I believe it's a system resorces problem. So, here's my question to you all:

Are any of you running Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4 and have the ACTIVE DESKTOP running? The active desktop takes up an extrodinary amount of resorces. This may be the source of you problem.

Just trying to add my 2 cents to help the problem

Hi guys!
I've tried install SMAC at P2/300MHZ/64RAM/6GbHDD/Matrox G100/win95
with IE4 and aktiv desktop and two telnet sessions at the same time and it worked - no problemos, WoW!
I suppose it has something to do with CD-ROM
compatibility couse the game is dying just a few seconds bifore it starts reading data from CD.
I wonder folks if ya have probs. with uninstall?
;^)

Hi. Jarvik
Same problem over her in Norway. The strange thing is that the game works on my nr.2 machine, a PII-300 MHz (without soundcard or fancy 3dfx card), but not on my PII-350MHz with SB live and voodoo2 and TNT card. I get as far as the FIRAXIS GAMES logo and then it stops, but ones in a wile it starts! When it stops, I have to use Ctrl+Alt+Del to get back in Win98.
I see some think the DVD is the source, but non-of my machines have DVD players.
I normally run in 1024x768, but have tested the 800x600 without any luck.
When I used the full install, uninstall did not work.

IT FINALLY WORKS
After many hours with work, updating everything. The problem was the SoundBlaster Live card. I found a new driver from November, installed it, and everything works find.

I had this problem and it is fixed with the US Terran.exe. In most cases, the problem seems to come from the european protection. Just download a US Terran.exe (not a patch !) and replace the european one by the US one.

In reply to jarleber....

You are describing a different problem to the one that people are suffering from with their DVD drives (if indeed that is the case). The "DVD problem" is that the game doesn't start at all i.e no splash screen, no task bar button and no (apparent) hard drive activity.

I think that the DVD diagnosis in this case makes sense, it seems likely that a CD protection system which relies on a unique key stored on the CD, generated by something in the CD burning process, could be read differently by a DVD player. There is one system, for example, which relies on imperfections in the CD to give it its ID's, it is quite possible that DVD drives don't read these "imperfections" in the same way.

Interstingly I get the same problem from another EA produced game.

I think we'd all like to know how long it will be before the European patch is available although I don't think that this patch will necessarily solve this problem. If it is a problem with the burning process then it isn't necessarily the fault of Firaxis because it is not something they're responsible for. I don't like the idea of having to download an executable with the copy protection removed for a game I have purchased but in this case it seems the only easy solution.

Perhaps Firaxis would like to comment on any preliminary investigations they have made?

Yours,

James P

Yeah, it worked for me too!
But I,m still confused!

What did I pay for?
Is that ok, purcheasing the game that's not complited or buggy?!
How about all that #")#(/! patch system.
All new games need patches!

huh!

Imagine, moving to the new hous without roof and windows and buyn' them later on?!

I say whata baloonies!!!
