This behavior existed before and after I upgraded to the 2.0 patch.
If you change the zoom level (using z or x), and then load a savegame (it may or may not have been saved after the zoom), the zoom always returns to the default zoom level.
I would much rather the zoom level either a) was saved in the savegames or b) stayed set to whatever you set it at when you hit ctrl-L.
The current behavior is just annoying.

I fully agree!!
I have a 21-in monitor that was very helpful with CivII--why take that away from me in the sequel?

P.S. Hey, Firaxis, not a bad sequel, though I must admit there's a part of me that misses the immediate identification with the surroundings and the cultures.
