the game more or less is randomly freezing, completely locking system, i.e. no kb lights, no 3 finger salutes, nada.
hard power off and then back on is the only way here.
the timing is more or less random, i haven't identified any specific instance that causes the problem. sometimes i can play for hours, sometime it happens almost immediately.
my system's hardware/software:

os: win98, patched w/ all the latest and "greatest"
directx: tried 6.0 and 6.1 no difference

p2-333 (not oc'd)
160mb sdram
supermicro p2dls dual pentium 2 LX w/ onboard adaptec 7880 motherboard (single proc only installed)
matrox g200 8mb w/ latest drvrs
2 x CL 12mb Voodoo 2's
Diamondmm monster sound mx300
intel pro 100 + pci nic
3com/usr faxmodem pro USB external modem
seagate cheetah 9mb, operating as ultrawide scsi (scsi id 6)
plextor ultraplex 32x scsi cdrom drive (plextor are expensive, but man do they rule)
ATAPI internal zip
19" mag monitor (keyboard and monitor are through a belkin 2 port ps/2 switch box)
logitech mouseman+ ps/2
about 6 fans in case :^) (it runs 28-33 c, airflow is good)
300 watt atx 2.01 power supply

what i have tried:

1.disabled sound, renamed sound.dll, 2.disabled a3d and eax in .ini file
3.set resolution/color bit depth to 8x6/16bit color
4.removed USB modem, uninstalled. disabled sound card, no go
5.updated video drvrs and video bios to most recent
6a.uninstalled/reinstalled game
6b.reinstalled directx6, same, tried 6.1, same...arghhh!!!
7.tried the patch, it makes no difference
8.disabling sound seems to cause MUCH less frequent lockups, hell, i played 6 hours once and it didn't even hick up, until..6 hours and 2 secs..
9. have an entire partition 1 gb that is empty so formatted, moved my 200meg swap partition to it (used to have more mem in system)
10. just for fun, ran low level diags on scsi drive, passed fine
11. i have made sure nothing except explorer.exe is running on startup, or otherwise.

i'd update the system bios, but i can't flash system bios, it won't take a flash but other wise is stable and passes all the diags i run on it regularly (i am a technician at a major OEM, so i have tools
every other game runs like a champ:
unreal, civ2, q1/2, 1/2life, shogo, prolly more
as do my apps:
office97, vc++ 6.0 (patched sp2), gamespy, mp3spy, ie, netscape, yadda yadda yadda...
(btw i have ie5 beta installed, relevant?)

help!

200 meg swap? Try letting windows determine the amount of virtual memory.
