Okay, this just started happening. I'm on 1024x768 (shouldn't matter, because this is what I've always played with). I have a P200MMX, 96 megs of RAM, Riva TNT 16 meg video card. Okay, I hurried the Universal Translator secret project. When the movie starts (well it doesn't actually start, it just blanks the screen, and shuts off the game. I don't know what else I can give you, because it has never done this before. By the way, I've hurried many, many SP, and all has worked fine. |

Can you duplicate the problem with an autosave? If not...If so, verify the other movies are working fine. If so, try manually copying that movie to a movies folder on the hd (in the installed games directory). If not, what recent software/hardware changes did you make to your system? jkm firaxis games |

Well, I haven't made any Software/hardware changes since I got the game. Now, I'm not sure what you mean with the auto save thing. And, I cannot play the movie, because it is in .wve format. |

You have a player in Movies directory on the CD... Just go to command prompt, go to CD (for examlpe d , then cd movies and then type: playuv15 <name_of_the_movie.wve> Enjoy! |

Sure. In the saves folder is an auto folder. The game by defaults saves every turn. Autosave1 is the last turn you took (well, the start of it). Autosave5 is 5 turns ago. See if by loading one of those autosaves you can duplicate the problem. Also, does like the intro movie still play fine? To play the movies outside of the game, you can use the command line, or drag the *.wve file onto the player within a window. jkm firaxis games |

I tried the movie thing, didn't work, the same thing happened, as when it tried to start in the game. I tried to start the game up, but the Firaxis logo was all discolored, and it shut off. I had IE5 and AOL running at the time, so I'll try it without those on (plus I'll restart the computer, just in case). I'll get back to you. |

Okay, I loaded autosave1 and let it play through a turn. I hurried the Secret Project again, and played through the next turn. When the movie was about to start it shut the game off again. It never actually gets to the movie. The screen goes black, and I think it changes screen resolution, my desktop flickers (screen stops being black, and show the desktop) to a lower resolution, then the game shuts off, and my desktop returns to normal. Should I get Direct X 6.1? |

Hows the intro movie play? <><> Well, the opening movie worked fine. I'll install the DX6.1 later, and see what happens. |

Ugh, now the game doesn't start at all. Okay, I installed DX6.1 and the new drivers for my video card. Now I get an error message about: Ddhelp When I looked at the details thing, it said it caused a fault at the module VPR.DLL. |

That sounds like a reboot issue. Run DXDiag.exe to track down the problem if it persists. jkm firaxis games |

First I wanted to thank you for your responses Jeffrey, butyou're not getting rid of me that easily Okay, I ran the Direct X tests, everything works fine. The Direct Draw, and D3D work fine. I ran scan disk earlier today, so nothing new should be there. Now, it gets to the opening movie, then it shut off with the same warning message as before. I even re-installed the game. Still nothing. What really bothers me, is that this just started, and the game worked perfectly since I got it last week, until now of course. And this isn't a reboot issue, I've rebooted many, many, many times. Thanks. |

Hard drive space drying up? Do you leave the swap file size to be determined by windows, or do you manually do it? jkm firaxis games |
Kyle |

Windows is taking care of the swap file. According to Windows Explorer, I have 828 megabytes left. I have a lot of things to delete, so I can get more. |

I'm completely baffled. Anyone else out there have something similar to this? If so, any tricks I'm forgetting? jkm firaxis games |

Not as much as I am. I swear, I haven't added any software from the time I got the game (and the patch a few days later), and when the thing stopped working. I tried it again this morning, the opening movie worked fine, and as soon as it stopped, it shut off. I'll try a few other games, and see if it happens there too. |

I have a similar problem. I believe it started when I got the 2.0 patch. Sometimes, but not always, the screen goes black and the computer freezes when a secret project movie should play. The computer isn't totally frozen, in that the hard drive runs when I don't hold down the mouse button, but does not run when I press the mouse button. I sit there and turn the hard drive on and off with the mouse button, hoping to unfreeze the computer, but it never works. The problem seems to occur more often frequently when I rush secret projects, and particularly if I rush two projects in a single turn, when the second project is very likely to freeze. Also, sometimes the movies play smoothly, and sometimes they stutter throughout. Also, sometimes there is a single stutter at the beginning -- about 1 second of sound plays, then the drives whir for a while, then the remainder of the sound and video play smoothly. Also, sometimes the Zoom to Base / Proceed box pops up before a movie plays, and sometimes it doesn't. Freezes seem to be more likely when the box doesn't pop up. In addition, the verbal messages -- "Drone Riots," "Nutrient Shortfall," etc., play all at once at the beginning of each turn, overlapped to some degree. I believe this problem started with the 2.0 patch. I have a 200 MHz Pentium with a 4 MB Stealth Diamond 2000 video card, a Soundblaster 64 sound card, and a 32x CD ROM drive. I have DirectX 6.0. I will try installing DirectX 6.1 this weekend. If I am able to isolate a saved game that reliably recreates the frozen movie problem, I will e-mail it to you. However, I am generally able to load an earlier saved game and play through without the freeze. I don't know if it is because I move my pieces differently, or because I freed memory by rebooting or what. |

I'm still have to check some other games, but I'm grasping at straws here, if I sent you my saved game, would that be of any use? |

I dont have a problem with the movie starting, i have a problem with the spec proj movies crashing my machine. i'm running a brand spanking new (bought alpha centauri same day i bought computer last sunday) 366mhz celeron with 5mb AGP card and 10gb HD with 32MB ram. the game runs ultra smooth, the intro movie runs without a hitch and i tried all the other suggested fixes here. but like i said the only way for me to keep the game from totally crashing my system is to turn off the spec proj movies. i loved the movies from Civ II and i really wanna watch all of these especially since i have yet to conquer Planet

I too am having a similar problem. Sometimes after movies play (they play correctly), the game kicks me to the desktop with the same Ddhelp error message. This can happen during the opening movie or a secret project movie. My system is a P200 (no MMX), 128 MB Ram, and a Diamond Viper V550 16 MB(PCI). The crash happens in VPRDD.DLL, and appears to be related to switching resolution back to 1024x768 to play the game (or continue the game). Perhaps there is some incompatablity with the Diamond Drivers? Will |

Run DXDiag.exe and look for "!" and run the various tests. If any problems are noted, get the latest versions of your video drivers and perhaps get DX 6.1 (www.microsoft.com/directx). Also, try directdraw=0 and 8bitmoviesound=1 in the alpha centauri.ini. Try renaming the sound.dll to sound.dl_. jkm firaxis games |

Would those two lines go at the end of the .ini file? And where exactly are the .dll's? |

Anywhere in the file is fine. The sound.dll is in the folder you installed the game into. jkm firaxis games |

Now if only that helped me... I made the changes to the ini file. I also renamed the Sound.dll. Still the problem persists. I now get the DDHELP error before a movie starts, instead of after it finishes. Any other ideas? Will |

The Video Mode=1024 was the missing key. It seems to run fine now. For future reference here is what I changed in Alpha Centauri.ini: 8bitmoviesound=1 I also put the sound.dll back as I didn't have any sound in the game after renaming it. Will |

FYI I got updated drivers and Direct X 6.1, and have not experienced any more problems with the movies. (I had a problem with the computer freezing during movies, as discussed earlier in this thread) |

It seems I have a similar problem. P150, Hercules 3d/DX graphics card. I see no movies, screen goes blank - but they sound great. A mouse click ends the movie and I'm back in the game. I'm downloading the latest drivers but has anyone else got the same problem? (Also see similar with Settlers3) Thanks |

I've got the same problem I have a Intel 233mmx What happens is that the movie will run, and poof I get a error with ddhelp and the game goes poof. I've upgraded the drivers, down graded the drivers, uninstalled the card and re-installed with the original drivers, re-installed direct x, summoned the great deamon Blargath, no luck. If anyone from firaxis is interested I do have the Dr. Watson diagnostic dump, as well as a saved game with the particular problem |

See my .ini file above. You need to tweak it abit to get the game working. Turn off Direct draw, turn on the 8bit sounds, and force the video mode to whichever you keep it at, either 800 or 1024. |

Thanks but still no luck, The next thing I may try is to use the reference drivers from NVIDIA instead of the diamond dirvers and see if that helps... |

Well I'm OK now. Changed the Hercules 3D/DX driver from version 1.26 to 1.28 problem was full screen direct draw (WIN98) With service like this this Internet thing might take off on day... |

I had the same problems with a Diamond Viper 550. It worked well after I exchanged the Diamond drivers for the Riva TNT reference drivers (ver. 048). Ewald |
