Here's the situation. I've got a friend who has a cable modem running on a server. He has a local area network (not using static internet IP's for the LAN). He uses winroute to do IP spoofing. We are able to sucessfully play other games in multiplayer. However, SMAC does not want to start the game right. We can connect, configure the options, chat, but when we click on launch game, it just sits there and gives those timeout messages. We are both using latest patch, and DirectX 6.1. If he plugs his cable line into one of his LAN pc's, and reconfigures the NIC to the Cable IP, we connect fine, so it has to be something with the spoofing.

My question is this, how does SMAC do multiplayer packet transmission? Does the host query the players? Do the players query the host? Does everyone query everyone else? It doesn't matter which of us host, we can't talk, if he's spoofing his IP. Like I said, it works for other games (i.e. Starcraft). Any help would be appreciated.

A little more info on this one.....
Just to let you know it my cable modem....
Last night I hooked the cable modem back up to my hub and switched my IP addresses back to my ISPs local subnet. When I do this I usally just run a Proxy Server (also WinRoute) so my wife can still surf around, however with the proxy running,no spoofing/NAT running, we experienced the same problems as running though my Firewall/Router .The Proxy runs on port 8080 so it should be well out of the way.So cant figure if a port or packet redistribution problem,or something else. However I know both StarCraft and AOE will work in the above config, and StarCraft across the firewall (haven't yet tested AOE).
Sorry for the long winded message any thoughts will help.
Thanks...
WoD

Looks like we got put on the back burner. I was wondering if we were going to get a response.

Thanks,

I just thought I'd come back and add some more to this. You know, since no one else has <hint>. According to what Jeffrey stated in an earlier post, in order to get through a firewall you have to open up the ports that DirectX uses. I got that information from microsoft. We opened them, no go. This works for Starcraft, Age Of Empires, Quake, seems like there was another one, but can't remeber. However, AOE uses directX for it's internet play, just like Alpha Centauri is SUPPOSED to. So why does this work for AOE, but not for SMAC? Please explain this to me. I know you've had a lot going on, but I've waited for an anser to this for exactly one month. That's long enough. Please help!

I can verify what you are experiencing with your firewall.

I use IP masquerading (IP spoofing has negative overtones). Other DirectPlay games work correctly with the DirectPlay ports open -- Alpha Centauri does not.

I can actually make it to the multiplayer "chat/faction assignment" screen, but then I get no network response in the game.

Cheers,
cjr
