posted 02-16-99 01:54 PM ET My friend and I have been attempting a multiplayer game. We have tried both direct dial-up AND Internet. We get about 3 or 4 turns into the game and it just bombs and kicks one (or both) of us back to windows. All drivers are DirectX compliant and neither of us have any problems in the single player game. Any ideas - is anyone else having this problem??

By the way. We both have the 2.0 patch installed...

By direct dial, you mean one modem calling another? Regardless, what happens to the player who doesn't get dropped (in those instances)? Also, any pattern of events lead up to the crash? What speed have you guys connected at? Thanks for any additional details.

This same type of crash is going on with us. We installed the patch V2.0, and every time about 5 turns into the TCP game (56K) I get shot off the game. Meaning I get a windows notice that the game has performed something illegal and will be shut down. The other player stays on with a notice that I have left the game. Ive been reading that rebooting our systems after certian crashes helps to prevent them in the future. Will this help us? I did change my Sound.dll file to Sound.dl but obviously this disables all the sound in the game. Are their any other ideas to fix this without loosing the sound?

This occurs also with my IPX games just my computer crashes unless someone else hosts then both of ours crash. It always occurs when I finish research on my third green technology. Right as the tech advancement screen appears the game crashes with an illegal program operation. I tried reinstalling the game and patch but to no avail.

Single player works fine ecept I hear no music with the version 2 patch but did hear music with version 1. However I tried uninstalling the version 2 patch and now SMAC works fine in multiplayer. For me at least the version 2 patch causes more problems than it solves.

No - I am experiencing NO problems with the single player game at all (no sound problems or anything). It is confined to multiplayer only...
