I downloaded the patch but when installed the sound didn't function. I rebooted my machine and ran SMAC and still no sound. The opening Firaxis logo came over alright but after that nothing. I reinstalled from my CD and the sound is okay now. Bug? Buggy sound card?? Probably, it's a Yamaha, but it worked okay before the patch. Perhaps I don't have a 'US version' of the game? (a req for the patch). I'm in Australia.

Does the autorun have an electronic registration button? You have the US version. What's probably happening is that EAX and/or DS3D is enabled in the alpha centauri.ini file. Set both of these to 0 (and maybe reboot).
