I have sound in windows, and in the old demo SMAC.
But I have a lot of warning icon beside the driver name in dxdiag.
My volume control are all UP so don't ask that question.
There was sound in the little film in the beginning of the game, but nothing after.
I hope somebody can help me......

Did you apply the patch? Is this a Dell? If so, set DS3D and EAX to 0 in the alpha centauri.ini file. Reinstalling DX 6 might make sense too.

Try the ini mods as well. Especially if the sound is fine pre-patch.

I did play a game without the patch, and all of the sounds worked beautifully. Then I decided to download the patch and the sound went away, except for the opening movie sound. I uninstalled the game and the 1.1 Demo (which was still installed) in case there was some sort of conflict between the two. I then reinstalled the game (sans patch) and ran it, and everything worked fine again. Installing the 2.0 patch, however, disabled the sounds, music, and voices as before.

My computer is a 400 MHz PII Midwest Micro Computer, and my sound card is a SoundBlaster PCI64 Legacy, which I think is pretty "standard."

(I did check in the audio/visual options to make sure that everything was on already.)

Well, I tried modifying the .ini file as suggested (DS3D and EAX to 0), and it did seem to restore the sound. I ran the dxdiag on my sound and it found one small problem after passing a gazillion tests. I may try reinstalling DirectX from my Win98 CD and then re-enable the .ini flags to see if that changes anything.
