Well, got my SMAC today. Great game ! I just have a small complaint. No, it's not the slow moving units (i use quick-move all units anyway). It's the relative "sluggishness" of the game when it comes to menues and in the selection of production in cities. Also in the unit-building screen there is "slugishness". Let me explain....
When i play, i play fast (at least after i've gotten used to the game a bit). I like to zip through menus and production screens in miliseconds, scanning the info and clicking all the way. In alpha centauri, the clicking with the mouse on the production-pictures in the city screen seems slow. Often i feel i have to click "hard" to select production. It also seems that menus and screen take quite longe to load up (relative to other games AND the demo). In the demo, i can remember the whole thing being much smoother.
Maybe it's just me, but if any of you have experienced the same "slugishness" in the controls i would appretiate a response.

Darn, forgot to mention that i already read the readme. There is nothing in there that is similar to my case.
I've played a little more since i first posted here. It seems that everytime i come out of a game, then want to restart the game to play again, it freezes my system totally. Either is freezes directly (still on my desktop) or it freezes when the first firaxis 'add' appears, or it freezes right after the first firezxis 'add'. I ALWAYS have to restart my computer after i've played a game, so these crashes do not occur.
It really seems that this game needs a little bit more debugging ... can only hope that it's already been found and fixed in the upcoming patch.

Kraut: Do you have your resolution set higher than 800 X 600? I did, it was sluggish. I changed it ot 800 X 600 and it was fine.

I have it at 800x600. I guess the sluggish game is just because of my ppro200. If i had a p2450, i'm sure it would be a 'bit' faster ... darn, now ya almost need a super-machine just to play strategy games ...

I just picked it up last night, played for a few hours... Using the big-huge map, unit moves were slow, graphics sometimes not so happy, and menus not so fast either. Thought it may be just the size of the map, the fact that I am just above real "minimum" system at this time (C200MX, 64megs ram w/ 98 and a 2meg video card).

At least today when I get home I won't be bummed out that the small map is just as slow.

Well, i've found a solution to most of the sluggishness. I installed the low-res gfx and it eliminated most of the troubles.
Funny thing is, i can hardly tell the difference between low-res and high-res. Seem about the same ...
