I just got the game installed. I run the game and it hangs on the Firaxis screen. Any thoughts? I have:
Reinstalled DirectX -- I am running 6.1
Checked versions of my video driver
Checked versions of my sound driver.
-John
P.S. My system is:
PPro 200
64mb Ram
1.6 gb free
Viper 550 w/ Diamond 555 version drivers
SBLive
Logitech Trackman

It does the same thing for me.
dx 6.1
sblive -newest drivers (i think)
riva128 -newest reference drivers

im almost positive that its the live. every post ive seen a post like this, they have one.

Yep that is it. When I rename sound.dll to sound.dl_ it works ok (except w/o the sound) . I know this isn't to be heaped all on Firaxis, but it seems to me that this should have been caught in QA. It is very disapointing when you make the effort to get the game early and can't even play it.

Had the same hting happen to me several times. It seems to happen everytime i use my shortcut i created from the "terran.exe" file. But only happens every once in a while when i start SMAC out of the start-menu.
Also, had the game crash right after displaying a S-proj. video.

That's where the intro movie starts. Refer to the readme.txt for info on troubleshooting the movies.

Thanks for the reply. However I don't think it is the video stuff. I read the section int the readme about it and checked the file-system real mode stuff, and added the directdraw=0 to the ini file and nothing helped. What did help is renaming the sound.dll to sound.dl_. The game ran just fine (including the videos which had sound) except that it didn't have any sound. When I renamed the sound.dll back it crashed again in the exact same spot.

Well, if it was a bug, everyone would be experiencing it. The problem is figuring out what piece of hardware is causing the conflict. Do the movies play outside of the game? You can drag and drop one of the .wve files onto the movie player to view them outside of the game. I personally use a SBLive, so I doubt it's the problem. I'm using the drivers that shipped with the card. Did you upgrade? What's DX think about your Live drivers. What about the Viper?

Well, when I drag a wve file on playuv15 on the cd it locks up. My SB Live drivers are the latest (11/25/98). My Diamond Viper Drivers are the latest (255). So I don't know what else to do. What drivers are you running? My version of Directx is 6.1.

Ok, when i run the movies with playuv15, they run fine. Ive reinstalled the drivers for the live (11/25/98) and new drivers for my v330 (diamond 1.30). Im going to try the drivers that came with the live, and see if that works. oh yeah, the sound.dll trick didnt work, so maybe its the viper. ill get microsofts drivers for the viper too, since 1.30, one of the files isnt certified

jkeane: Try copying the movies to the HD and see if that makes any difference. Make sure you're running 32-bit CD-Rom drivers if that fixes it.

ahos: DirectX says the live drivers are certified. DXInfo says it's ctmm16.drv, dated 8-20-98.

Thanks for your fast reply. My dxinfo says:

Driver: ctmm16.drv
Version: 4.05.00.1052 "4.05.1052" English Final Retail
Date and Size: 08/24/98 01:01:00 16944 bytes
Current files : ctmm16.drv (English),
emu10k1.vxd(English, 8-20-1998)

Dxdiag says i have 2 sound files not certified (sb16snd.drv, sbfm.drv)

And i just tried the microsoft drivers for the viper v330, all the drivers are certified now, but it still dont work.

My cd is running on 32bit drivers, but ill try copying the movies to the hd, just in case

Thank everyone for your help. Actually, all I needed to do was to rerun dx setup off the cd. I don't understand why this helps, cause it is a rev back. But it now works ok. Thanks again.

Houston, we dont have a problem!
It seems the sb16 drivers were lingering around from the good ol' days. Anyway i got rid of them, but it still didnt work!
so i uninstalled SMAC, and reinstalled it to the default directory (i previoulsy had it installed to the D: drive, although the folder name was the same), and BAM! now it works! Think there could be a bug with installing it to a different directory/drive?

I have just rinstalled SMAC for about the fifth time. Every time I try and run I hang at the Firaxis screen as well. I tried reinstalling Direct-X 6 and I reinstalled the game with all the defaults. Still no help. Running through Direct-X info tests, all tests pass with flying colors. I tried to play a video dragging the file and it plays choppily. Any comments?

I am running a Pentium II 400
128 Mb Ram
SB Live!
Diamond Viper V550 AGP
Diamond Monster 3D II

Thanks in advance.

Try the readme.txt troubleshooting options (directdraw = 0, rename sound.dll). DX 6.1 might be a smart download as well. You can get v2.0 of SMAC on our board and you might as well. If none of that works, email me at [email protected] with your system specs and recount the problem (and explicitly what you've tried). Thanks and good luck.
