I just bought SMAC at Software Etc.

I loaded it ... and went to www.alphahq.net ...

Only two people were there - both were from QA (quality assurance). Seems they are still testing the multiplayer setup stuff and it is not ready for use yet.

Another problem is that on the main screen it says you must get update to 1.2 before you can play.

The QA people told me that the 1.2 update was not yet available but would be soon (they did not know if out of the box would work and could not test it for me).

I remember the FIASCO that Interplay had with MAX2 where it did not work in multiplayer out of the box (and NEVER did even after 4 patches) and would hate to see SMAC in the same predicament (there were alot of very irate MAX2 customers).

So ... how can we play SMAC muliplayer? I have KALI if that is an option.

And ... when will 1.2 update be available so we can use the ALPHAHQ site?

Thanks.

If your only method is internet (TCP/IP), I'd get ICQ installed and setup games that way. Our multiplayer forum may also help you swap IP numbers. Multiplayer works fine out of the box, though keep in mind that an average game may easily last longer than 10 hours.

Update...

1) LAN game worked ok with 2 players
2) Internet game worked ok with 2 players, but we arranged it using KALI. Have to have the IP address for the host in order to join.

Questions:

A) Is there a quick and easy way to tell what your IP address is? Mine changes every time I dial in and I find it in a round about time consuming way.

B) Is the patch 1.2 or 2.0?

Thanks.

Try winipcfg.exe if you're in W95/98. Enjoy, and please pass on what the lag time is. Thanks.

IPX over a LAN did not work long for me. After a few turns it always locked up. TCP/IP over a LAN did not work either because it kept trying to dial w/ my modem.
