I'd better join the crowd. SMAC has never crashed during a game (lucky me), but has stopped working twice now because of a problem with save games. SMAC crashes immediately after I run it (I get to see the firaxis logo). If I remove the 'saves' directory, SMAC runs (IMHO not a good solution .

I consider my system to be fairly stable, and have played Half-Life, Settlers III, RailRoad Thycoon, Baldurs Gate, FallOut 2, and heaps of other games without problems.

I have at least a GIG free for swap, and 500 MB on the partition containing SMAC. I've tried the ForceOldVoxel stuff, checked my Dx drivers, but alas nothing helps.

Finally, my baby:
PII 266 Mhz on a AL440LX (intel board)
128 MB RAM
2x9.1 gig SCSI UW HD
ATI Xpert@Work (8MB)
Voodoo2 (probably not important)
SB AWE64
DVD Encore (contains SMAC CD)
SCSI CD-ROM (I had space left)
Keyboard, mouse (useful)
Windows 4.10 Build 1998 (for games)
Dx version 4.06.00.0318 (ditto)

That's a new one. Did you install any new HW or software between it working and it not? Well, try setting your HW acceleration down to 0.

No, no new HW or SW installed, but I did set the HW Graphics acceleration down to 0 (painful, but I did it), and whoa, it works.

Seems like I have a problem with my ATI card that only SMAC manages to provoke.

But, but, it seems mighty strange, how can a saved game cause my ATI to crash SMAC, even before I tried to load it?

Well, off to the ATI site, maybe there are some new drivers...
