Hi,

I bought SMAC (UK Version 1.01E) two days ago and so far it (terran.exe) has steadfastly refused to run. No matter what I try I receive an error box stating 'No disk inserted' before ending up back at the desktop.

This occurs using any installation size (including full install) on any of my hard drives), even with the CD in the drive.

System:
P200MMX 64Mb RAM
Hard Disk C: and D: 4.3Gb Maxtor, partitioned into 2x2.1Gb drives.
Hard Disk E: 1.2Gb Quantum, with windows managed swapfile only
CD-ROM F: Smart 12x IDE CD_ROM
Graphics: 16Mb Maxi Gamer Phoenix
Sound: Soundblaster PCI128
OS: Win95 OSR2

The UK version is a real pain - the copy protect mechanism they used is really unreliable and doesn't work on many CD players and DVD players. I've only found two solutions to this problem. Either install a second CD player which does work or get hold of a US version of terrain.exe, this doesn't have the copy protection and will allow you play with no disk after a full install and will allow you to use the patch.

The US version is 3Mb as apposed to 1.5Mb for the UK one, I suspect that this is because its compressed to make it harder to remove the copy protect. I also suspect that this makes it very hard to patch....

Thanks for the response.

I just posted on the forum after doing a brief search for installation problems. Reading deeper I guessed that the problem was something to do with copy protection.

I'd upgraded my graphics card, joystick and sound card to play Falcon 4 - now someone suggests a new CD-ROM as well

I've seen the arguments on this forum for copy protection, but don't really believe a word of them. I'm also getting a little tired of UK/European software differing from its US incarnations.
