I can't run the standard version of Alpha Centauri on my laptop. The screen blacks out once the program is loaded. The "laptop" install version works fine, except that it is very slow, with all of the continuous reading from the game CD. I've got a 300Mhz laptop with 192 Megs of RAM, so system resource availability would not present any issues with a standard install. Any thoughts on how to get the standard install to work?

Where does it black out? Do you see the firaxis logo? If so, it's probably the movie player and DX. Try installing DX 6.1 from www.microsoft.com/directx and using DXDiag.exe to track down any problems.

Good news: Tried the "Typical" install. Upon execution, the Firaxis logo comes up, screen goes blank.

Bad news: I'm running Win NT for Workstations (SP 4), and the Msoft DirectX download site intimates that 6.1 is non-compliant with NT. Any thoughts?

Right. Well, find out if there is a new NT driver for your video card from the manufacturer. If worse comes to worse, play with the typical install, but without the CD in the drive.
